Most visitors to the Lot Valley take the busy D662 to reach the famous village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie. But at Camping Ruisseau du Treil, we like to share what we believe is the best route to Saint-Cirq-Lapopie: it is quieter, safer, and filled with hidden gems.
Whether you are cycling, driving, or even taking the local bus, here is our recommended “Slow Travel” day trip from Larnagol.
Why This is the Best Route to Saint-Cirq Lapopie

Step 1: The D8 A Better Route to Cycle and Drive
If you are planning to head toward Saint-Cirq-Lapopie on two wheels, we always recommend the D8.
While many maps might suggest the D662, that road can be busy with sheer cliff faces and blind bends that aren’t ideal for a relaxing ride. In contrast, the D8 has very little traffic and takes you through some of the most charming, picturesque villages in the valley. It’s a much more pleasant experience, especially for those who aren’t used to narrow French cliff-side roads!
- Pro Tip: Don’t have your own bike? You can catch a bus from Larnagol village centre into Cajarc, where bike hire is readily available.
- The New Greenway: You can also pick up the brand-new cycle path (the old railway line) from Le Communal in Calvignac, just across the river from the campsite.
Step 2: A Knight’s Welcome at Château de Cénevières
Just a 20-minute cycle from the campsite, you’ll find the Château de Cénevières. This isn’t your typical “museum” castle; it’s a family-owned jewel perched dramatically on the cliffs.
We highly recommend taking the guided tour. The family often leads the tours themselves, sharing stories of the 13th-century dungeon and the beautiful Renaissance galleries. It is the perfect first stop on your journey westward.
Step 3: Experiencing Saint-Cirq-Lapopie Like a Local
Saint-Cirq-Lapopie (or “Saint-Cirq” as we locals call it) is undeniably beautiful, but it can get very busy in the high season. To see it at its best:
- Go Early: Arrive in the morning before the crowds. The light on the stone buildings is magical at 9:00 AM.
- Climb for the View: Don’t just walk the main street. Make sure you climb to the ruins of the Fort de Saint-Cirq at the very top of the village. The panoramic views of the Lot Valley are the best in the region.
- The Chemin de Halage: From the village, follow the path down to the river to walk the Towpath. Look closely at the cliff face—you’ll see intricate sculptures carved directly into the rock by artist Daniel Monnier, depicting the life of the river.
Step 4: Lunch with a “Gone Fishing” Connection
While there are many lovely cafes in Saint-Cirq, they can get quite crowded. For something a little different, head across the bridge to Tour-de-Faure.
There is a wonderful little boulangerie-pâtisserie there that we highly recommend. Fun fact: we believe this is the very spot where Paul Whitehouse and Bob Mortimer stopped for a bite during their “Gone Fishing” Christmas Special in 2024! It’s a great place to grab a traditional treat and enjoy the quieter side of the river.
A Perfect Return to the Bar
After a day of exploring castles, cliffs, and sculptures, head back to Camping Ruisseau du Treil. We’ll have a cold drink waiting for you at the bar—the perfect way to toast a successful day in the Lot.
